Who is Oscar Lopez Rivera?
By Elias A. Mora
Oscar Lopez Rivera wanted independence for Puerto Rico because Puerto Rico didn't have basic human rights. Oscar was in a group called F.A.L.N. (“Armed Forces of National Liberation” or in Spanish Fuerzas Armadas de Liberación Nacional), an organization that fought and advocated for the independence of Puerto Rico. He Became Disillusioned by the U.S.’ Treatment of Puerto Rico After Serving in Vietnam & Believed the Island Was Treated as a Colony But all that changed in 1981 when Oscar got arrested for a bombing that the group did accept he didn't have anything to do with the bombing the group took it upon themselves to bomb four buildings. Oscar was falsely accused and put into jail without a trial and was sentenced to 55 years in jail. Not only was Oscar violated of his human rights he was also called a terrorist for being apart of F.A.L.N. Oscar spent his days in jail until when in 2017 Oscar was released by president Obama because Obama saw that he was wrongfully accused. if it weren't for Obama, Oscar wouldn't have gotten out of jail until 2023 and he would have been 80 years old. Oscar is currently 77 years old.
Campaign
The human rights violations are significant in Puerto Rico and often overlooked by the USA. One of the most recent events was the loss of homes, water and medical care after hurricane Maria. I am creating a campaign to raise awareness for independence for Puerto Rico. My campaign will convince people Puerto Rico should be an independent country because Puerto Ricans should be able to govern for themselves. I would like to start a petition to bring to Congress in hopes of presenting my plan to the President of the United States.

Independence
Puerto Rico needs independence because Puerto Rico doesn't have basic human rights which is bad because that means they don't have the basic needs for a human. one human right they don't have is Rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people. Among the 60 femicides during the year, six of those killed were transgender people, four more than in the previous year, according to the Observatory of Gender Equality of Puerto Rico. Read more. Some people are nationalists, some people want statehood and others want to remain a commonwealth.

How we can help?
We can help make Puerto Rico an independent country by learning about human rights and by signing a petition to make Puerto Rico an independent country and mail it to the president. You can also help by asking what the people on the island want.
