Who was Marielle Franco?
Marielle Franco grew up in a favela (slum) called Mare in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Marielle’s activism involved standing up for the causes that drove her life: the rights of LGBTQ+ people, Afro-Brazilians, and the poor to be free from violence and discrimination; and all Brazilians’ rights to a good education, police violence and health care. She used her job as a councilwoman to speak up. She wanted the government to be accountable and investigate human rights violations. She was killed for speaking up sadly in 2019 when she was 38 years old. However, her messaging that every Brazilian is entitled to their human rights, regardless of their background has continued on.
